Drainage, Edging & Recessed Covers in Somerset, Bristol & Devon
Drainage and edging are the details that decide whether a driveway still looks right in ten years. Water has to go somewhere, edges have to hold, and manhole covers don't have to be ugly. We treat these finishing details as part of every installation — and fit them to existing drives too.
Why people choose it
- ✓ Water managed properly — away from the house, garage and surface
- ✓ Edges that stay crisp instead of crumbling and spreading
- ✓ Recessed covers that let the surface flow uninterrupted
- ✓ Compliance with front-garden drainage rules
- ✓ Protects the investment in the surface above
Problems it solves
- → Water running into the garage or against the house wall
- → Puddles standing on the drive after rain
- → Crumbling driveway edges and spreading blocks
- → Ugly raised or sunken manhole covers in an otherwise smart drive
- → Planning compliance for new front-garden surfaces
What's included
When you compare quotes, check what's actually in them. Ours include the things that determine whether the job lasts:
- ✓ Drainage assessment — where water comes from and where it should go
- ✓ ACO channel supply and installation, connected to an appropriate outfall
- ✓ Gully installation and repair
- ✓ Edge restraints, kerbs, setts and decorative borders
- ✓ Steps, thresholds and ramps
- ✓ Recessed manhole cover supply and fitting, infilled to match the surface
How we install it
Assess
We work out the falls, where water collects and where it can legally and practically discharge — soakaway, lawn, or existing drainage.
Install
Channels, gullies, edging and covers installed and bedded properly on concrete — these details fail fast when they're rushed.
Integrate
Everything finished flush and tidy so the drainage and edging look like part of the design, not an afterthought.

Drainage & Edging — your questions answered
What is an ACO channel?
A linear drainage channel with a grating, set into the surface — typically across a garage threshold or the bottom of a slope — that intercepts running water and carries it to a drain or soakaway. It's the standard fix for water running where it shouldn't.
What is a recessed manhole cover?
A tray-style cover that sits where your existing manhole is, but gets infilled with the same blocks, resin or slabs as the rest of the drive. The cover stays fully accessible for inspections, but visually it almost disappears.
Do front gardens have drainage rules?
Yes — new front-garden surfaces over five square metres should be permeable or drain within the property (not onto the road) to avoid needing planning permission. Permeable resin bound, permeable blocks, or correct falls to a lawn or soakaway all satisfy this, and we design for it as standard.
