How the driveway cost calculator works
Our calculator uses a Google aerial map so you can measure your driveway, patio or path from above. You mark each corner, we calculate the area and perimeter, and you tell us about the surface you want and the existing site. We then produce a transparent guide-price range using fixed, published rates — no guesswork and no AI-invented prices.
What affects driveway installation prices
The biggest factors are the area, the chosen surface, and the condition of what's already there. A sound base that simply needs a new wearing course costs far less than a failed surface that must be dug out and rebuilt. Edging, drainage, access, slope, steps and waste removal all add to the cost too.
Full installation versus overlay
A full installation excavates the area and builds a new sub-base before the surface is laid — the right choice for grass, soil, or a failed surface. An overlay lays a new surface over an existing sound base, which is quicker and cheaper but only suitable where the base is genuinely stable and well-drained. Why excavation and sub-base condition matter
Most driveway failures come from a poor base, not the surface itself. That's why the calculator asks about the existing surface and its condition, and why a site survey is essential before any fixed price.
Drainage considerations
Since 2008, new driveways generally need to manage surface water — either with a permeable surface or with drainage such as channel drains or a soakaway. See our drainage and edging service for details.
Resin, block paving and tarmac pricing factors
Resin-bound pricing depends on the base and aggregate; block paving on the block choice, cutting and edge details; and tarmac on area and access for the laying machinery. Larger areas usually cost less per square metre. Patios in porcelain or natural stone are priced on the laying detail.
Why an on-site survey is still required
The online figure is a guide. Only a free site visit can confirm the base, levels, drainage, access and exact measurements needed for a fixed written quotation. Aerial measurement is never treated as exact.

Driveway cost calculator — FAQs
Is the online price a formal quotation?
No. The calculator gives an initial guide-price range only. A free site inspection is required before we can issue a fixed, written quotation — it accounts for the true base condition, levels, access and drainage.
How accurate is the aerial measurement?
Aerial measurements are approximate. Trees, shadows, image age, property boundaries and camera angle all affect accuracy, so we always confirm measurements on site during your free survey.
Can I enter the area manually?
Yes. If you'd rather not draw on the map, you can type your approximate area in square metres. We clearly mark manually-entered measurements as estimates.
Can I measure more than one section?
Yes — you can add several separate areas (for example a main driveway, a side path and a patio), each with its own measurement and chosen surface.
Can the calculator tell whether my driveway can be overlaid?
It gives a strong indication. If your answers suggest an overlay may not be suitable, we warn you, show a full-installation alternative and widen the guide range — but we never reject your enquiry. The base must be inspected before confirming.
What affects the cost of a resin driveway?
The main factors are the area, the condition of the existing base, whether full excavation or an overlay is suitable, edging, drainage, access, levels and waste removal. The calculator reflects each of these.
Does the estimate include excavation?
For full installations the guide allowance includes excavation and a new sub-base. For overlays and cleaning it does not, because no new base is built. Your survey confirms exactly what's needed.
Does the estimate include VAT?
The guide price shows whether VAT is included or added. Where the calculator shows prices, the VAT treatment is stated next to the figure.
