Block Paving Driveways in Somerset, Bristol & Devon
Block paving is the classic driveway choice for good reason: it's tough, looks smart for decades, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if anything ever needs attention. We install it properly, from the sub-base up.
Why people choose it
- ✓ Proven durability — a well-laid block drive lasts decades
- ✓ Huge choice of colours, sizes and laying patterns
- ✓ Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid — genuinely repairable
- ✓ Adds kerb appeal and a sense of quality to any frontage
- ✓ Permeable block options available for drainage compliance
Problems it solves
- → Sunken, rutted or patchy old driveways
- → Cracked concrete that can't be repaired invisibly
- → Poor drainage and water running towards the house or garage
- → A frontage that doesn't match the standard of the property
What's included
When you compare quotes, check what's actually in them. Ours include the things that determine whether the job lasts:
- ✓ Full excavation to the correct depth for vehicle loads
- ✓ Compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base — the foundation of the whole job
- ✓ Screeded sharp sand laying course
- ✓ Concrete-haunched edge restraints so the edges never spread
- ✓ Drainage falls, ACO channels and recessed covers where needed
- ✓ Blocks laid to your chosen pattern, cut neatly at edges
- ✓ Kiln-dried sand jointing and plate compaction
- ✓ Full site clean-up and aftercare guidance
How we install it
Design and quote
We measure, talk through block choices, patterns and borders, check drainage, and give you a clear written quote with no hidden extras.
Excavation
The area is dug out to the correct depth for driveway loading — skimping here is the number one cause of sunken block paving.
Sub-base
MOT Type 1 hardcore is laid and compacted in layers to create a solid, stable foundation.
Edge restraints and drainage
Edge courses are set on concrete with haunching to lock the whole surface in place, and drainage channels or gullies go in where water needs managing.
Screeding and laying
A precise screeded sand bed, then blocks laid to your pattern — herringbone for maximum strength on drives — with neat cuts at edges and features.
Jointing and compaction
Kiln-dried sand is worked into the joints and the surface is plate-compacted to lock everything tight. We sweep up, clear the site and hand over.
Ideal for
- • Driveways of any size, from single parking spaces to large frontages
- • Properties wanting a traditional or contemporary block look
- • Drives that need to handle vans, motorhomes or heavier vehicles (built to suit)
- • Front gardens needing permeable paving for planning compliance
Options & finishes
- • Standard, premium and tumbled block ranges in many colours
- • Herringbone, basket weave and stretcher bond patterns
- • Contrasting borders, keylines and apron details
- • Permeable block paving systems
- • Matching paths, steps and patio areas
Aftercare
- • Sweep regularly and rinse as needed
- • Top up kiln-dried sand joints after the first winter if needed
- • Treat any weed growth in joints early — it roots in the sand, not the base
- • Consider sealing after 12 months to lock joints and resist stains
Block Paving — your questions answered
Will my block paving sink?
Not if it's built properly. Sinking is almost always a sub-base problem — too shallow, poorly compacted, or the wrong material. We excavate to the correct depth and compact MOT Type 1 in layers, which is exactly the detail to ask any installer about.
Which laying pattern is strongest?
Herringbone (45° or 90°) interlocks in both directions, which is why it's the standard recommendation for driveways. Basket weave and stretcher bond look great on patios and paths with lighter loads.
Will weeds grow between the blocks?
Wind-blown seeds can root in the sand joints over time, but they don't come up from underneath a proper build-up. Regular sweeping keeps them away, and sealing the surface makes joints much more resistant.
How long does a block paving driveway take?
A typical 2–3 car driveway with full dig-out usually takes around four to six days depending on size, access and drainage works. You'll get a clear timescale with your quote.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not — front gardens can be paved without permission if the surface is permeable or water drains to a lawn or border within the property. We design for this as standard with permeable blocks or correct falls and channels.
