Devon block-paving considerations

Sloping driveways need interlocking patterns, firm edges and controlled drainage so the surface does not creep, spread or hold water.

Rural entrances and longer driveways may need a stronger sub-base and practical block choice, especially where vans or heavier vehicles use the area.

For a sloping frontage, follow the water from the top of the drive to its proposed outlet. A channel across an entrance needs somewhere suitable to discharge; simply adding a gully to the lowest point does not establish a working drainage system. Threshold heights and the join to the road should be recorded before excavation.

Conventional block paving and permeable block paving use different construction details. If infiltration is proposed, the joints and base layers must suit the system and the ground must be assessed. Where infiltration is unsuitable, the survey should explain the alternative water route. Do not assume standard sand-jointed blocks form a permeable driveway.

For a larger rural approach, tell us about shared use, delivery vans and trailers, and show the narrowest entrance. Material storage, waste removal and access during work affect both the programme and quotation. Where most of an existing drive is sound, lifting and relaying a failed patch may be a better first option than wholesale replacement.
