Block Paving Driveway Costs: What Drives the Price
Block paving prices vary far more than the per-square-metre figures online suggest, because most of the cost is underground where you can't see it. Here's what genuinely moves the number up or down, so you can read a quote properly instead of just comparing headline rates.
Excavation and what's underneath
Block paving is only as good as its sub-base, and that's where most of the real cost sits. A proper job means digging out to the right depth, carting the spoil away, and building a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base in layers. Skip that and the surface sinks — which is why a suspiciously cheap quote is usually cheap underground.
If there's an old concrete or tarmac drive to remove first, breaking it out and disposing of it adds to the bill. Awkward access for a digger or skip can push it up further.
Block range and pattern
Standard concrete blocks are the most economical; tumbled, textured and premium ranges cost more per square metre. Pattern matters too — herringbone is the strongest choice for driveways but generates more cut blocks around the edges than a simpler stretcher bond, and cutting is labour.
- • Block range (standard vs tumbled/premium)
- • Laying pattern and the amount of cutting it creates
- • Borders, keylines and contrasting bands
- • Circle features or bespoke detailing
The details that complete the job
As with any driveway, the extras that a corner-cutting quote leaves out are exactly the parts that make it last. Check whether these are included before comparing prices:
- • Edge restraints set on concrete haunching
- • Drainage — falls, ACO channels or gullies where needed
- • Recessed manhole covers so the pattern flows across inspection chambers
- • Kiln-dried jointing sand and final compaction
- • Muck-away and disposal of the old surface
