For a tarmac driveway that lasts, we excavate to the right depth, remove the spoil and build a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base before any tarmac is laid. The base is what stops a tarmac surface rutting and cracking.
A proper tarmac driveway is not a single thin layer. We lay a binder (base) course followed by a finer wearing course, each rolled while hot, so the finished surface is dense, even and hard-wearing.
Tarmac needs a firm edge to restrain it. Block, brick or concrete edgings keep the surface tight, while block-paved borders add appearance and designed falls, channels and gullies manage surface water.
