Tarmac Driveways in Somerset, Bristol & Devon
Tarmac is the practical workhorse of driveway surfaces — clean, smart, quick to install and extremely hard-wearing. With proper preparation and neat edging details, a tarmac drive looks sharp and lasts for many years.
Why people choose it
- ✓ Excellent value for larger driveways and rural entrances
- ✓ Hard-wearing surface that handles daily vehicle use with ease
- ✓ Quick installation with minimal disruption
- ✓ Clean, uniform finish that suits any property
- ✓ Pairs well with block paved borders for a premium look
Problems it solves
- → Potholed, breaking-up old drives and shared access lanes
- → Loose gravel that ruts, scatters and needs constant topping up
- → Large areas where premium surfaces would stretch the budget
- → Farm and rural entrances that need a tough, practical surface

How we install it
Assessment
We check whether your existing base can be regulated and overlaid or whether a full dig-out is the right call, and design the falls so water drains properly.
Preparation
Excavation and compacted sub-base where required, ironworks set to level, and edging installed to frame and contain the surface.
Surfacing
Binder course and surface course laid hot, levelled and rolled to a smooth, even finish with tidy joints against thresholds and channels.
Ideal for
- • Driveways of all sizes, especially larger areas
- • Shared drives, lanes and farm entrances
- • Slopes — tarmac performs well on gradients
- • Commercial areas, car parks and forecourts
Options & finishes
- • Red tarmac for a distinctive finish
- • Block paved borders and aprons for a premium frame
- • Combined designs — tarmac drive with block or resin feature areas
Aftercare
- • Avoid sharp point loads (jacks, motorbike stands) in hot weather — use a load-spreading board
- • Clean oil spills promptly
- • Keep edges clear of soil build-up so water can reach the drainage
Tarmac — your questions answered
Is tarmac cheaper than block paving or resin?
Usually, especially on larger areas, because it lays quickly over a similar base build-up. That's why it's popular for big frontages, shared drives and rural entrances. We'll quote options so you can compare properly.
How long before I can drive on it?
Typically you can walk on a new tarmac drive within a day and drive on it after two to three days depending on weather. We'll give exact guidance on handover.
Can you tarmac over my existing drive?
If the existing surface is sound and levels allow, an overlay can work well. If it's failing underneath, an overlay will mirror those failures within a couple of winters — we'll always assess and advise honestly.
